Sharp Community Medical Group needed to ensure high availability for its mission-critical practice management (PM) and electronic health record (EHR) solution.

The 850 doctors and specialists at Sharp Community Medical Group (SCMG) wouldn’t be able to do their jobs without the group’s Allscripts Enterprise practice management (PM) and electronic health records (EHR) system. Based in San Diego, California, SCMG is an independent doctor practice group serving more than 500,000 patients.
The group relies on Allscripts solutions to support patient registration and scheduling, billing and clinical care. “Allscripts is critically important to us, so it needs to be accessible around the clock”, says Charles Deckert, the group’s vice president of health information technology solutions.
In addition, SCMG wants to focus its time and resources on providing the best healthcare, not managing infrastructure. “We really need a business partner to host Allscripts and other key applications”, Deckert explains. “We need someone to manage the back end so we can manage the actual software. That’s why we need a platform-as-a-service solution”.
To meet its needs, SCMG selected NTT DATA to host the group’s Allscripts EHR environment and other applications in the NTT DATA Cloud on Demand solution. “We need reliability and security, plus flexibility as we grow and adapt to the market”, says Deckert. “We have a lot of applications from different vendors, and NTT DATA is willing to host them all. Other vendors we evaluated didn’t offer that flexibility”.

By running its critical applications in the NTT DATA Cloud on Demand, SCMG has a centralised system that streamlines patient management throughout the network. “We recognise that coordination of care is extremely important – it sets the stage for our doctors’ success”, says Deckert. “The better they can collaborate, the more successful they are and the better care we can provide for their patients. We can do this because NTT DATA takes care of managing our systems for us”.
SCMG is benefiting from the flexibility NTT DATA provides. “There is constant change in healthcare, whether regulatory or technology-related,” explains Deckert. “As a result, we need to address frequent changes required to hardware and software. NTT DATA offers us the flexibility to navigate these changes”. Each week, the SCMG and NTT DATA teams communicate about shifting requirements. “It has been a strong partnership as we work together to find solutions to our regulatory and technology problems and challenges. The NTT DATA team genuinely seeks to understand and address our business needs”, Deckert continues.
Additionally, SCMG controls costs because it takes advantage of a fixed-price hosting model offered by NTT DATA. “We always know what our costs will be, even when we’re adding new users”, says Deckert. “Because of the fixed per-user price NTT DATA offers, we pay the same for hardware, licensing and connectivity, regardless of how large we grow”.
